This is Dr Gerry Haggerty, the team doctor for Glasgow Warriors. The Scottish battlers were in town for a Pro12 league game against local team the Ospreys. Glasgow had never won before at the Liberty Stadium, but held out 20 – 26, including a tense final few minutes with only 13 players, to record a crucial away win.
Gerry and the team were enjoying a gentle warm up on Swansea Bay seafront when I bumped into them. I had been hunting the sea wall for interesting textures and graffiti to create a new header image for my documentary website and the idea that I might photograph walls was not a strange one to Gerry. He recounted to me a tale of fellow Irishman, Sean Scully, famous for his striped and chequerboard painting and his photographs of the Isle of Arran’s sea walls.
